Burda October Issue Picks

posted in: Sewing | 1

I have been a little disappointed late with the choice of styles on the recent BWOF magazines.  For example, the July and September issues had NOTHING that I liked or would look remotely decent on me.  They ended up on eBay, why keep something I’m not going to use when there are others out there that really want it?  Besides, with the subscription being as expensive as it is, it does not make sense to keep issues you flat out don’t like.

Anyhow, I looked at the online preview of the October issue and I was sure that would be the case this time around as well.  I thought for sure I’d end up selling it as well since there was nothing on there that really grabbed me.  For starters, they have A LOT of heavy winter coats…..and I live in Miami.  I have no need for one of those.  The other stuff just didn’t really appeal to me.

I finally got my hard copy in the mail yesterday and had a chance to look through.  Slim pickings for sure but I don’t think I’m going to sell it, at least not just yet.  While I’m not crazy about any of the styles, there are a few that sorta look OK so I’m going to keep this issue just in case, at least for a little while longer.

So, without further ado, here are my picks from the October issue.  As I said, I’m not crazy about any of them but they are what I think are the best out of this issue.

Dress 117
It’s a knit dress so it probably wouldn’t look good on me anyway.
Dress 112
Double layer shoulder pads…yikes…but it looks good (though maybe not on me)
Dress 114
I’d be curious to see what this silhouette looks like I’m me.  I also love the flowers, though I’d scale them WAY down since I’m so short.
Tunic 122
I like this one.  I would not make it in suede (again, Miami) though.
Blouse 121 and Skirt 123 A
I like the blouse.  I am on the fence about the skirt since I haven’t had luck with this type of skirt but maybe now that I’ve lost weight they wouldn’t look too bad.  I still have a while before I give it a shot.
Top 135 B
This one is in the Plus section and since I’m straddling the plus and misses sizes, it would probably work for me as far as sizing is concerned.  I like the drape and the crossing front sections.  I might give it a shot with shorter sleeves.
I mentioned weight loss earlier in this post and I think I mentioned it previously as well.  Well, I will keep my starting weight to myself but I can tell you that as of today, I have lost 14 pounds since I started Weight Watchers on August 12th.  I’m pretty excited about that and very proud.  Hopefully in a few months I’ll be down to my goal weight.  That won’t solve my problems but from experience, I know that it will make me  happier and much more confident.  Yes, I know that weight is just a number but, unfortunately, it’s a number that just weighs us down, pun intended.  It’s not so much the number but the fact that, let’s face it, most overweight people don’t look good in most clothes.  I have a particularly disproportionately large tummy, even when I’m thin (which I have been, believe it or not) so I ALWAYS have a very hard time finding clothes that don’t accentuate that.  I have done WW before very successfully but then fell off the wagon when I met my husband, got married, etc.  Hopefully it will stick this time!
