You Can’t Touch This!

One of the July challenges on Pattern Review is “RTW (ready to wear) and designer knock offs”. The idea is to copy a ready to wear garment or a garment by a designer. We can use commercial patterns or draft my own. I am finally eligible to enter challenges and I think I am going to enter this one. The outfit I have chosen is one that I liked the minute I saw it. I really can’t pin point what it is about it that appeals to me but it just does. There is no guarantee it will look good on me since I am so short (not quite 5’2″) but I won’t know unless I try.

I have owned this pattern since it came out this spring and I think I’m one of the 5 people in the US that actually bought it (that might be a bit of an exaggeration). I guess I better say what outfit it is. Now, brace yourself because it is not a typical jacket and pant set! Without further ado…..I present to you this unique outfit:

This is from AKO’s Spring/Summer 08 line. AKO stands for Andrea Katz Objects. All the designs by that label are very edgy in this same way. I can’t say that I like them all but I do like their originality and edgy look. The pattern I am using, which is where I first saw this design, is Vogue 1116:

I just read the pattern instructions and I think I may have just lost my mind and I am not sure if it’s because I like this specific design or because I chose a pattern that has SOOOO many pieces. Both pieces of the outfit are lined and each one has about a zillion individual pieces that must be sewn together. It will be quite a task and I really hope I can complete it. I am torn as to which piece of the outfit I should start with in case I don’t have time to finish both. One the one hand, I would get the most use out of the jacket (I think) so that would be the logical piece to start with but on the other hand, the pants are really the wow piece here and what first attracted me to this outfit. All I know is that I better get started on the muslin since we can do that before July first. This outfit will probably take me all month to sew, if not more. We’ll see what happens.

And yes…..they do look like Hammer pants.
