I Need a Sign!

So, the University of Miami finally came back with a financial aid package.  Not good, not good.  The package includes no grants, just $3000 in Federal Work Study, $4500 in a subsidized Stafford loan and $6000 in an unsubsidized Stafford loan.  A grand total of $13500 out of the almost $37000 that tuition alone costs.  The VA will pay an extra $7500 or so which still leaves me with $16000 a year to get through private student loans.  I read the email at school and I seriously wish I hadn’t because I was in front of people and I was THIS close to bursting into tears.  Really, I thought I was going to be sick.

I have been advised against going to my other two choices, Barry University and Florida International Universtity.  The person that advised against FIU actually teaches there.  However, I have also been advised against taking on private student loans so honestly, I’m between a rock and a hard place.  Do I settle for debt or do I settle for an education that is less than what I want?  I don’t know what to do, I’m not a person who believes in “signs” but I’m hoping for a sign.  What do I do? Which is the lesser of two evils?

I think you should go for it! You will probably regret it if you don’t attend UM because it seems like you truly truly want to go there very badly. I think that some debt is worth it if you want a great education.

Hello, just because UM is only offering a certain amount of financing, doesn’t mean you can’t get financing from other sources! Search online, there are tons of different options out there, you just have to look for them. Best of luck!
